Here are the biggest news, sport and entertainment headlines of 1998…

Politically, there was real progress in Northern Ireland when, after 30 years of violence and nearly two years of intensive peace talks, an agreement was reached. The ‘Good Friday Agreement’, as it was called, laid down a future of friendship and harmony and led to British Prime Minister Tony Blair and the Republic of Ireland’s leader, Bertie Ahern, receiving acclaim from all corners.

The much talked about ‘Human Rights Act’ received royal assent, meaning that the UK had to fall in line with the ‘European Convention on Human Rights’. Amongst other things, it gave a legal right to life, a fair trial and freedom of expression; prohibiting discrimination, torture, and the death penalty. Some saw it as necessary for a civilized society whilst others saw it as yet more interfering European bureaucracy.

Another arrival from Europe causing debate was the 43rd Eurovision Song Contest. This year’s competition was held in Birmingham and hopes were high for UK entry Imaani and her song ‘Where Are You?’. She pulled off an admiral 2nd place behind Israel’s entrant, male-to-female transsexual Dana International. The winner attracted much post-contest hype and publicity, then everyone remembered that it was only the Eurovision song contest anyway. As for Imanni, the fact you don’t even recognise the name tells you all you need to know about her subsequent music career.

Also giving hope to the UK (well, the English part of it anyway) was World Cup 98 in France. As always, fans were hoping / praying / begging that this would indeed be the year and, as near always, things went a little bit wrong. England were the victims of penalties again (this time to Argentina) and, new face on the block David Beckham was the victim of his own temper. Having been sent off for a silly kick at one of the Argies, Beckham got blamed for everything and was hated by everyone (including, probably, Victoria).

No doubt Jim, Barbara, Anthony, Dave and Denise, of the Royle family, would have been watching the World Cup from the comfort of their sofa in their council house in Manchester. Who would have thought that a TV show about other people watching TV would be such a success? Actually, they didn’t just watch TV, they also smoked cigarettes, made cups of TV and broke wind! It’s doubtful whether Jim Royle would have been impressed with American cult import ‘South Park’ but the rest of the UK certainly got into it; millions tuning in every week to see “Who killed Kenny?” (many more may have tuned into find out who had killed Beckham!)

The cinemas saw a swing back to America for the big successes of the year with no noticeable UK films coming out in 1998. The bloody ‘Saving Private Ryan’ was a second world war hit starring Tom Hanks; the story involving a group of soldiers with orders to safely take home a Private James Ryan to his mother, whose other 3 sons have already been killed. A lot less bloody and a lot more singing and dancing was the re-release of ‘Grease’. The high school love story coming back to the big screen 20 years after its original release (this time with enhanced colour and digital sound).

Breaking 1992 down into the biggest political, sports and entertainment news; here’s what happened…

The queen had both an expensive and an embarrassing year; early on announcing that she would bow to public pressure and pay income tax (the first time a British monarch had done so for over 50 years) and, at the end of the year, having her Christmas speech leaked to and published in ‘The Sun’ ahead of the big day. It was also a bad year for Manchester after the IRA exploded two bombs in centre of the city; injuring 64 people and causing millions of pounds of damage.

Politically, the government, led by John Major, made themselves unpopular on two fronts, by firstly signing Britain up to the ‘Treaty on European Union’ (many saw this as a loss of Britain’s identity); then secondly announcing it’s plans to close a third of Britain’s deep coal mines, with the loss of 31,000 jobs.

In terms of sport, 1992 saw Barcelona hosting the Olympic Games; it being the first time in 20 years that every country had been present (with no boycotts or bans in places). Linford Christie was the star of the event by becoming the oldest ever Olympic 100m champion (at 32 years old!). The year also saw ‘The Football Association’ launch the new ‘Premier League’, no-one at the time quite realising the revolutionary effect that it would have on the game.

Entertainment wise, the quirky, fast paced breakfast TV programme ‘The Big Breakfast’ made its debut. There was plenty of chaos and disorder on the show; Chris Evans being the one to lead the fun, games and competitions. The BBC were far, far less successful with their attempt at entertaining the public with ‘Eldorado’. Focusing on a community of ex-pats living in a Spanish fishing village, it was slated for its wooden actors and uninspiring storylines (later to be axed after just one year).

The big movies of the year were ‘Wayne’s World’ and ‘Reservoir Dogs’. The first being about Wayne and Garth’s battling it out with a hot-shot TV producer to save their own low-budget TV show (and also win the heart of the lovely Cassandra!). The second being Quentin Tarantino’s story of a botched robbery and the hunting out of the ‘rat’ (was it Mr. White, Mr. Orange, Mr. Blonde, Mr. Pink, Mr. Brown or Mr. Blue?).

Violence in video games, on TV and even in cartoons has been a sore spot of concerned parents for decades. Unfortunately, nothing has changed, well, that is not exactly true, as things have gotten a lot worse. Violence in entertainment is a reality, many people who are frustrated or wish they could do those things, would rather watch them than do them, unfortunately, there are some who are imprinted with this behavior through that visual experience and seek to do those things in the real world. The Internet has brought around-the-clock news coverage into our homes along with twenty-four hour coverage of less crucial, more tantalizing fare in this information age. These days, the line between news and gossip is becoming increasingly blurred, particularly by the media. What constitutes news and what is gossip? The definitions don’t really make it clear, after all what is “news” to one person may seem like mere idle gossip to the next. Take a look at these definitions decide for yourself:

News: New information about specific and timely events relevant to the general public, or a program devoted to conveying such news to the public.

Gossip: Casual or idle talk about others, usually without foundation and negative in nature. In today’s world, gossip is often broadcast via the media to the general public.

There is plenty of news that is “negative in nature,” but that doesn’t automatically make it gossip. Of course, the news does have to be properly substantiated. But the media these days is making it more and more difficult to differentiate between what is news and what is gossip. In fact, the media itself is an entity that seems to answer to no one and can report either news or gossip as it sees fit:

Media: Forms of mass communication that carry or store information. In this instance, mass communication forms such as television, newspaper and Internet that convey news or information to the public.

When someone who works for a media outlet says, “I’m with the press,” you don’t know if he is a reporter for a major media outlet such as NBC or he is reporting for a gossip rag like you usually find at the checkout counter of your local grocery store.

If you do a search for the name of a certain pop star/celebrity these days, literally millions of results will pop up. Some of them will be links to high quality, respectable news sites with what most people would consider newsworthy updates. Quite a few of them will be links to sites that are pure gossip. Not newsworthy, but certainly entertaining to many people.

In the case of a celebrity, it isn’t necessarily essential that you know whether you are getting the information from a reliable news source or a gossip site that hasn’t checked its sources or confirmed whether its facts are correct. But what about when you’re reading about a political candidate, someone in public office or Fortune 500 executive? Are you forming a judgment about the individual based on verified facts or vindictive gossip that is making the rounds of the Internet that started with a conversation overheard in a bar or club?

Whenever you’re reading a media story on the Internet, make sure that you are always aware of the source of the story. Look not only at the headline of the story but also at the name of the website itself. Is it a reputable news provider that you trust? If you read the story in a blog, is the blogger using unattributed quotes, or does he name the people he refers to so that the facts can be substantiated? Do the news stories you’re reading have reliable bylines from well-known reporters?

With the Internet making it easier for websites to blur the line between news and gossip or entertainment, consumers have more personal responsibility than ever to make sure they know and understand the source of their news and entertainment.
